Our Specialties

Adult Reconstruction & Joint Replacement (ARJR)

Physicians at HSS pioneered the first modern knee replacement that was used worldwide in 1974. Today, surgeons in the ARJR Division continue to lead the field in both innovation and number of hip and knee replacement surgeries performed each year. Our physicians are constantly developing new surgical techniques, using smaller instruments and smaller implants, to facilitate hip and knee replacements. These procedures are opening doors for our patients – to get them pain-free and back to doing what they love to do.

Foot and Ankle

Complex, constantly impacted, rugged, yet intricately balanced, feet and ankles are some of the most frequently injured areas of the body. HSS leads a multidisciplinary approach to properly diagnosis your condition and provide an effective treatment plan.

Hand & Upper Extremity

The bones, nerves, joints, and muscles of the hands, wrist, forearm, elbow, and shoulder are critical to nearly every activity of daily living. When injury or disease threatens their viability, overall quality of life is at risk as well. Hospital for Special Surgery’s Hand Service is world-renowned for treating children and adults suffering from all bone and soft-tissue conditions of the hand and upper extremity.

Neurology

HSS neurologists are board-certified with additional training in neurophysiology, neuromuscular disease, and movement disorders. Testing and evaluation of the spinal cord and nerves provide a comprehensive view of neurological conditions and their treatments.

Pediatric Orthopedics

  • All HSS MRI’s are performed utilizing high spatial resolution/thin slice imaging to demonstrate definitive diagnosis for any orthopedic condition with specific interest to cartilage and labral health.
  • Customized orthopedic protocols have been developed specific to each referring physician's specialized surgical needs. All of our joint protocols have been validated against a surgical standard and DO NOT require intra-articular gadolinium contrast.
  • Specialized scanning is performed for detailed diagnostic examinations despite orthopedic hardware and total joint replacements.  The use of MAVRIC (Multi-Acquisition Variable-Resonance Image Combination) for all areas with metal presence which accurately provides greater detail of any joint arthroplasty/fracture hardware by markedly reducing the metallic distortion normally seen on routine MR imaging.
  • Modified MRI pulse sequences have been devised at HSS allowing for early detection of degenerative changes in cartilage and the potential for intervention. The use of quantitative T2 Mapping allows for assessment of the collagen component of the extracellular matrix of articular cartilage.
