Deformity Correction

HSS is the #1 orthopedic hospital in the U.S. and a national leader in rheumatology. This content was created by our physicians and experts.

X-rays of scoliosis before and after corrective spine surgery.

Deformity correction is the surgical adjustment or modification of bone that grows incorrectly as the result of a disease or condition, such as bowlegs or knock knee. Spinal deformity correction surgery can be used to help patients with scoliosis, kyphosis, trauma, or other conditions that affect the spine, such as ankylosing spondylitis. Corrective surgery may also be used for conditions in which the hands, fingers, arms, legs, knees or ankles grow at incorrect angles or lengths. See also Limb Lengthening Surgery.
