In 1985 at age 16, I was hit by a car as a pedestrian resulting in an above the knee amputation. I was able to walk and live my life with my prosthesis which had a socket covering my stump. The socket, however, limited me because if I walked too much or it was humid outside, my skin on the socket would rub against the plastic of the socket and cause a friction burn. I learned about osseointegration and met with Dr. Rozbruch who thought I would be an excellent candidate. On March 15, 2021, I had the surgery performed by Dr. Rozbruch along with Dr. Otterburn, the plastic surgeon. From this past Thursday (November 9th) to Sunday (November 12th), my family and I visited Paris. Over those four days, I walked 30 miles (10 miles on the first day). Not only did I keep up with my family and not need to stop, but I also had no discomfort. Prior to osseointegration and still wearing a socket, this would never be possible.
