We look forward to seeing you. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the office at 212.606.1451 or irvingc@hss.edu.
Which days are available for a private office visit?
Dr. Dodwell’s schedule changes every week. Typically she is in the private office location Wednesdays and Thursdays. Sometimes appointments outside of these days are available. The office staff will do their best to accommodate your schedule.
My child needs surgery, which days are available?
Dr. Dodwell typically operates on Fridays, but occasionally she has elective time on Mondays and Wednesdays. For emergency surgeries, additional operative times outside of the regular schedule are often available. We will do our best to accommodate your schedule.
What insurance does Dr. Dodwell take?
At the private office, Dr. Dodwell takes most forms of Oxford, United, BCBS, HIP, Cigna and Aetna. She is also in the process of enrolling in some exchange plans. Dr. Dodwell also works at the HSS Medicaid clinic and the NYHQ Medicaid clinic. Please call the office, and the staff can provide more details.
Can I send my child to an appointment with a grandparent? Babysitter?, or do I have to be there?
Dr. Dodwell typically requests that one of the parents/primary caregivers attends the first appointment. Dr. Dodwell may need to ask a lot of questions on the child’s medical history or make a treatment decision, so this first visit is easier if one of the parents/primary caregivers is present. If you want to send your child with a caregiver for follow up visits, this can be arranged. You will need to send a signed letter to the office, giving permission for the child to be seen with the caregiver. This can be faxed to 212.774.7065 or emailed to irvingc@hss.edu. If you are unable to be present at the child’s visit, please ask the caregiver to take detailed notes, or make yourself available by phone during the visit.
I’m pregnant, what happens if my child needs X-Rays?
We always ask that a child be accompanied to visits with a non-pregnant adult, in the event that X-rays are required. The adult can go right into the X-ray room with the child, and will be given a protective gown. Having a familiar adult present during the X-ray can be calming for the child, and help them sit or lay still so we can get a good picture. In younger children, sometimes the adult is required to help hold the child in position during the X-ray. Many children don’t like to be held by strangers, so having a familiar adult present is incredibly helpful.
My child has a new orthopedic injury, but it is outside of regular office hours. I don’t think this can wait until the office opens. Where should I go?
In emergency situations you should take your child to your closest emergency room. At NewYork Presbyterian Hospital, at 68th St and York Avenue, there is always a pediatric orthopedic surgeon on call, either Dr. Dodwell or one of her colleagues.
I have a question for Dr. Dodwell but it is outside of office hours. I don’t think it can wait. Is it possible to speak with the doctor?
There is always a pediatric surgeon on call at HSS and NewYork Presbyterian Hospital, either Dr. Dodwell or one of her colleagues. Call the regular office 212.606.1451. After hours it will go to the answering service. Tell the answering service that you need to speak to the doctor, and they will put you through to the doctor on call.
My child had X-rays/CT/MRI done at another doctor’s office does Dr. Dodwell need to see them?
Not all doctors order the complete set of X-rays that pediatric orthopedic surgeon like to see, and the quality of MRI/CT done at some facilities may not be the high quality/resolution that we get at HSS. However, if you bring in the images on disk, Dr. Dodwell can look at them and we may be able to avoid having to repeat X-rays/imaging at the office visit. Please bring/fax/email a copy of the report as well. If X-rays/imaging were done at NYPH (68th and York) or New York Hospital Queens (Booth Memorial and Main St), Dr. Dodwell can log into these systems and you don’t need to get a copy of the disk.
Can my child’s images from an outside facility be kept on the HSS system for future reference?
Dr. Dodwell would like to ensure your child’s imaging from other facilities is copied onto the HSS image system. The easiest way to do this is from home. When you make your appointment with the office, we will collect your email address. We will then send you a link to the Nuance Powershare website. Follow the link and instructions to upload your images from home.
Once you have uploaded the images, call the office (212.606.1451) or email irvingc@hss.edu, to let us know they are uploaded, and we will then transfer them over to the permanent HSS image system.
Dr. Dodwell will be able to bring the images up in the examination room and can go over them with you and your child.
If you are unable to upload the images yourself, you can bring the disk in. We will need to keep it for uploading, and you can pick it up at your next visit or we can mail it to you.
We’re seeing Dr. Dodwell for a second opinion; do we need to bring anything?
The more information you can provide to Dr. Dodwell the better. If there is a complex timeline, consider writing it down in advance. If you have records from other doctor visits or test results, please bring them. Dr. Dodwell likes to see the images herself, so great if you can get them on disk (these can be uploaded in advance, or brought in on disk).
My child needs surgery, does he/she need to see our pediatrician before surgery?
For healthy children, without serious medical conditions, having ambulatory surgery (same day surgery), pre-operative visits with the pediatrician are typically not required. We do however, need your child’s vaccination record.
If your child requires an overnight stay after surgery, or has a medical condition, they will have a pre-operative visit with one of the HSS pediatricians. These pediatricians are the doctors that will look after any medical issues while your child is admitted. For children with medical conditions, and those likely to stay overnight, we like our medical doctors to get to know the patients before they are on the ward. Our medical doctors work closely with the anesthesiologists and will be able to identify any issues that your child has that may require further evaluation or treatment prior to your child getting an anesthetic.
I want to leave the office a message, but it is not urgent. Is there some way I can email the office?
You can email the office by contacting Cameil Irving: irvingc@hss.edu
