HSS Patient Experience Surveys and Ratings
HSS measures many aspects of our patients’ experience using verified feedback collected from our independently administered patient experience surveys. Sharing our patient experience performance with the public is part of our quality mission, as it increases transparency and strengthens the connection between our patients and providers. It also empowers patients to make informed healthcare decisions.
About the survey
HSS measures many aspects of our patients’ surgical or office visit experience. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best rating. The ratings and reviews (survey comments) are submitted only by patients treated at HSS and reflect their own views and opinions. Patient identities are withheld to ensure their confidentiality and privacy.
How are Star Ratings created?
The provider Star Ratings reflects patients’ satisfaction levels with their provider during their surgical or office visit experience. Star Ratings are calculated using the below questions:
Patients receive the following questions after their surgical experience:
- Confidence in skill of surgeon
- Courtesy and friendliness of surgeon
Patients receive the following questions after their office visit experience:
- Overall care you received
- Courtesy and respect
- Listen carefully to you
- Explain in a way you understand
The provider Star Rating is an average rating of these questions over a rolling 3-year time period. A provider needs 30 or more ratings to have their average rating displayed publicly on their respective HSS.edu webpage. The HSS service line Star Rating is an aggregate of all the providers in that service. The overall HSS hospital rating is an aggregate of all patient ratings across all services.
