Patient Story of: Elaine Belton

In August 2002, I underwent spine surgery for a herniated disc at L5-S1. Before the surgery, even standing for more than 20 minutes was difficult. I experienced painful spasms in my groin, nerve damage, pain radiating down my left leg, and persistent discomfort in my left glute. There were certainly days when frustration set in, but I understood that recovery would require time, patience, and perseverance.

Prior to my injury, I had been an avid jogger for 15 years and had completed more than 60 races. After surgery, I adapted my goals and transitioned from running to speed walking. In February 2003, just months after my procedure, I returned to sanctioned New York Road Runners events as a race walker. Since then, I have completed more than 100 races, including three New York City Marathons in 2005, 2007, and 2009.

In 2009, I had the opportunity to give back by volunteering at HSS in the Ambulatory Surgical Unit as a surgical liaison. It was a meaningful experience at an institution that had played such an important role in my recovery.

Fitness has always been central to my life. The gym has been my second home for more than 40 years and remains a major part of my routine today. Many of the stretches and exercises I learned during physical therapy are still incorporated into my workouts, which often last up to three hours.

My motivation to recover was deeply personal. I wanted to maintain my independence, preserve my quality of life, avoid becoming a burden to my husband, and continue to feel like myself. I achieved those goals through consistency, dedication, and patience, supported every step of the way by family and friends. Most importantly, my husband stood by me throughout the entire journey.

As strange as it may sound, surgery was a blessing. Dr. Federico Girardi performed my operation with exceptional skill, and the care I received from the entire staff was marked by kindness, professionalism, and respect.

Today, more than 23 years later, I remain pain-free. I am active, independent, and grateful for the life I am able to enjoy. Looking back, my recovery journey taught me the power of resilience, the importance of support, and the incredible impact that outstanding medical care can have on a person's future.
