Department of Anesthesiology for Professionals

A Message from the Director

The Mission of the Department of Anesthesiology at HSS is:

“To achieve an international leadership role by providing the highest quality anesthetic care and pain management for patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery, to advance the science of regional anesthesia, pain management, and orthopaedic critical care through clinical and translational research, and to promote educational opportunities to all students of regional anesthesiology and pain medicine.”

To support this mission, our Department has adopted the Vision:

“To become the premier clinical, scientific, and educational practice for regional anesthesiology and pain medicine in the world.”

The Department of Anesthesiology at HSS is the premiere department in the world for the practice of regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine for orthopaedics.

Each year we perform over 30,000 regional anesthetics for patients undergoing the full spectrum of orthopaedic procedures. Our exceptional clinical outcomes - including a “99th percentile” ranking for in-patient analgesic satisfaction, New York State’s lowest infection rates, and low incidence of thromboembolic and cardiovascular complications - are a result of the skill and training of our anesthesiologists.

Although we work in a highly specialized environment and perform an unparalleled volume of orthopaedic cases, our anesthesiologists have diverse backgrounds with subspecialty training in pediatrics and pediatric anesthesia, cardiothoracic anesthesia, pain medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care and, of course, regional anesthesia. Our philosophy to embrace new and innovative equipment and techniques only after a track record of safety and efficacy has been well established.

Research initiatives include a variety of projects related to regional anesthesia and pain medicine and their applications to orthopaedics.

We achieve our goal to advance the science of regional anesthesia and pain medicine in orthopaedics through high quality clinical trials, and database and clinical registry studies. Extensive multidisciplinary collaboration with our peers in orthopaedics, rheumatology, radiology, neurology and pediatrics results in exceptional scientific productivity. We draw on the administrative support of the Research Division at HSS and the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatics at Cornell to enhance the scientific validity of our projects. Furthermore, collaboration with other outstanding institutions around the world increases the scope and quality of our clinical, basic, and translational research.

Finally, the Department continues to make outstanding contributions to the education of all students of regional anesthesia and pain medicine.

Our fellowship in regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine is among the largest and best in the world, and we have trained over 60 fellows in the last decade. Today, these fellows are clinical and academic leaders in regional anesthesia worldwide.

The Tri-Institutional Pain Medicine Fellowship is one of the most competitive and comprehensive programs in the country. We provide a comprehensive clinical curriculum in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine for residents from the Cornell and Johns Hopkins, and University of California-San Francisco anesthesia programs, as well as elective rotations in regional anesthesia for orthopaedics for institutions around the world.

Our anesthesiologists also provide instruction to students at Weill Cornell Medical College.
