“A Comprehensive Review of Lumbar Circumferential Fusion- Pedicle Screw Fixation vs. Interlaminar Fusion Stabilization” Philadelphia, PA November 2023
Attended North North American Spine Society Annual Conference, Los Angeles, CA, October 2023
Philip K. Paschal, MS
The Finn and Barbara Caspersen Fellowship for Spine Research provides research support for the Integrated Spine Research Program (ISRP), led by Dr. Frank P. Cammisa and Dr. Celeste Abjornson, which conducts both basic science and clinical research. Spine Service Research Assistant, Philip K. Paschal, is currently involved with prospectively researching clinical outcomes of spinal devices made from a certain polymer (PEKK) when used in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) surgery. He is also determining the colonization rate of occult bacteria in the superficial and deep tissue layers of healthy patients undergoing primary instrumented lumbar spine surgery. Most recently, he has delivered a virtual course describing the connection between the gut microbiome and the spine and has presented his work at several national and international conferences.
Gregory Paschal, MS
Gregory Paschal is a researcher in the Integrated Spine Research Program led by Dr. Frank P. Cammisa and Dr. Celeste Abjornson and oversees the basic science lab for the program. He is currently studying the biological response of mesenchymal stem cells on 3D printed titanium spinal implants to optimize surface morphology for bone regeneration and healing. He is also managing multiple clinical studies, including a prospective analysis of IV versus oral acetaminophen as a method to decrease opioid use perioperative to instrumented lumbar fusions, as well as a retrospective review of allograft cellular bone matrix as an alternative to iliac crest autograft in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. He has recently presented his research both nationally and internationally at the International Society for the Advancement of Spice Surgery (ISASS), Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (SMISS), and North American Spine Society (NASS) annual meetings.
