Compartment Syndrome

Emily Wold

Sports have always had a major effect on my life and have played a key role in defining me as an individual. Growing up I've always participated in multiple sports at a high level, but it was in sixth grade when I tried field hockey for the first time that I fell in love with this sport. Field hockey is something that continues to challenge me and allow me to grow as an athlete.

In 2011, I went to a local physical therapist because while I was competing, something just didn't feel right. When I was playing I felt as if I was stuck on the ground and couldn't move my legs to run. The physical therapist told me that I most likely had compartment syndrome and was going to need surgery. I immediately thought my life was over once I heard the word surgery. I was then referred to Dr. Metzl who took great care of me. He worked with me to try and minimize the pain and avoid surgery, but after a few months he determined that surgery was my best option. He recommended a surgeon, who I went to, and I couldn't be any happier with the outcome! I haven't had any problems since the surgery.

Dr. Metzl enabled me to continue playing the sport I love and compete at an elite level. I have played four years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and I am now training full time with the Women's USA National Field Hockey team in preparation for the 2016 Olympics. I will be competing for a spot on the Olympic team and will hopefully be on the big stage in Rio de Janeiro.
