About Dr. Selber

Dr. Paulo Selber is an orthopedic surgeon who has been involved in the treatment of gait and movement disorders in pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients for more than 25 years. He specializes in conditions such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, sequela of head injuries, stroke, spinal cord injuries and several neuromuscular conditions. 

A native of Brazil, Dr. Selber attended medical school at the Pontifice Catholic University of Campinas in São Paulo and completed his residency in orthopedc surgery at the Jundiaiense Institute of Orthopaedics and Trauma and Paulo Sacramento Hospital in Jundiaí state of SP.

After fellowship training in neuromuscular diseases at the Association for Assistance of the Disabled Child (AACD) in São Paulo, Dr. Selber went on to complete fellowships in pediatric orthopedics, cerebral palsy and three-dimensional gait analysis at Children’s Memorial Hospital Northwestern University in Chicago and Gillette Children’s Hospital in St Paul. Returning to AACD (1996-2001). He assisted with the implantation and direction of AACD’s first gait analysis laboratory and has worked with 7 gait analysis laboratories in Brazil, Australia, and the USA.

Dr. Selber then accepted a position as a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne (2001-2019) and at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in Sydney (2003-2012), working concomitantly in both of these prestigious children's hospitals for 9 years. He continued to work as an orthopedic surgeon at The Royal Children’s Hospital until early 2019 when he accepted a position at Columbia University. 

Early in 2022, Dr. Selber joined HSS where he collaborates with the Dr. Leon Root Motion Analysis Laboratory and continues to care for ambulatory and non-ambulatory children and adults with cerebral palsy. He has published and co-authored several peer-reviewed papers. 

Dr. Selber has lectured around the world on topics related to gait analysis and the orthopedic surgical treatment of the lower limbs in patients with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophies, strokes, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries. Spasticity/dystonia or other movement disorders that affect the lower limbs are Dr. Selber’s main clinical and research interests.
