No One Has To Live With Gout

Today's Geriatric Medicine features a bylined article by Theodore R. Fields, MD, FACP, rheumatologist at HSS, about getting relief from gout.

According to a 2017 CreakyJoints survey of 1,000 gout patients and 500 caregivers, one-half of all patients said they failed to tell their providers about all of their gout attacks.

More common in older adult populations, gout affects over 13 percent of men and 6 percent of women by the age of 75.

Dr. Fields writes that health care providers need to better educate their gout patients about the causes and successful management. "Lifestyle changes such as exercise, weight loss and diet, combined with medications that lower sUA levels can keep gout under control," wrote Dr. Fields.
