HSS exercise physiologist Polly de Mille, RN, MA, RCEP, CSCS, USAT, explains the potential benefits of cold-water immersion after exercise in a Furthermore article.

"There is considerable research that supports the use of cold-water immersion to reduce the perception of muscle soreness and muscle fatigue," said de Mille.

While there isn't clear evidence on why the technique is helpful, one theory suggests that the cold temperature reduces swelling and inflammation in the muscle.

According to de Mille, cold-water immersion within an hour of working out could be a helpful addition to an athlete’s regeneration routine.
