Driving performance through high-value care.

Center for the Advancement of Value in Musculoskeletal Care

The HSS Center for the Advancement of Value in Musculoskeletal Care will accelerate the development of HSS capabilities to deliver the highest quality and best value musculoskeletal care to the patients we serve. The center will develop and deploy high value musculoskeletal care solutions by pulling together unmatched clinical and operational expertise, data assets and analytical skills found only at HSS.

Key focus areas on value include measurement and communication, care delivery, innovative tool development, research and education.

Core Focus Areas

Value Measurement and Communication

  • Develop quantitative analytic support for HSS value proposition utilizing original research and external benchmarks
  • Assess and develop key messaging to convey HSS value initiatives both internally and externally
  • Expand data/analytic capabilities within the Center and build new visual dashboards for clinical operational areas.

Promoting Value-based Care Delivery

  • Facilitate optimization care outcomes by building the infrastructure to support the routine measurement and reporting of patient-reported and other health outcomes as a routing part of care delivery
  • Minimize complications by building programs to identify, treat, and improve patient risks and co-morbidities
  • Accelerate development of capabilities to manage musculoskeletal disease effectively and efficiently across broad care episodes and for populations through the:
    • Development of clinical triage algorithms and pathways,
    • Design and build of non-operative care solutions and clinical direct access programs for different musculoskeletal diseases, and
    • Coordination of care across time and site of service.

Development of Innovative Value Tools

  • Partner with HSS innovation team to design and build supportive technologies leveraging HSS knowledge and process design
  • Work with future external partners to build and grow innovations supporting value-based care and expand HSS offerings on musculoskeletal care
  • Design and develop new care delivery technologies for use in the broader healthcare market that will facilitate the delivery of high-value musculoskeletal care.

Value Research

  • Advance the development of predictive models for health improvement, risks, utilization of services and costs of care.
  • Facilitate and perform research that will inform the development and adoption of quality measures for musculoskeletal disease that are meaningful, accurate and fair.
  • Evaluate the validity and consequences/implications for HSS of various current national and state quality/value programs for musculoskeletal disease.

Value Education

  • Design new MSK Health CME courses and educational materials to extend high-value training and triage to non HSS clinicians

Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs)

Objective: Incorporate collection and use of PROMs into standard care delivery at HSS
Why this is important: Drive patient-centered care, assess pain and functional improvements, and measure value of care delivered
Key activities: Collect for all patients hospitalized at HSS, treated in HSS outpatient setting, and treated by HSS-affiliated physicians

Episode of Care Redesign

Objective: Coordinate patient care across the entire episode, from pre-treatment to 90 days post-treatment
Why this is important: Provide seamless, individualized care to patients to achieve optimal outcomes and enhance patient experience
Key activities: Centralize triage capabilities, implement risk assessment protocols, and enhance coordination across the episode to get patients to the right place at the right time, with the right level of care
