Our research is broadly grouped into five disciplines:

research icon 1

Basic Science and Soft Tissue Biology

Researchers investigate the basic cellular and molecular mechanisms of soft tissue healing so that we may develop novel ways to improve the treatment of ligament, tendon, and cartilage injuries. We carry out basic laboratory research with the goal being to translate our laboratory findings to patient care. Learn more about orthopedic soft tissue research.

Musculoskeletal Bioengineering and Biomechanics

Researchers in this area focus on bioengineering and biomechanics as it relates to sports and shoulder injuries. Computer modeling allows researchers to better understand the specific needs for each patient in effort to development a plan to customize surgeries. The ultimate goal is to devise a program whereby tailor-made surgical plans can be made for individual patients in order to best meet their needs. Learn more about biomechanics.

Rehabilitation and Performance

HSS researchers are advancing our understanding of how movement affects musculoskeletal pathologies, and generating knowledge that can be used to improve outcomes in rehabilitation and performance.

Clinical Research

Our research ranges from small pilot studies to Phase III multinational clinical trials. Our experience covers all phases from feasibility studies to late-phase trials.

Registries and Outcomes Research

Our research group is committed to conducting research to improve outcomes following total shoulder replacement, rotator cuff repair, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, cartilage regeneration, and hip preservation procedures. We currently maintain a registry that enrolls over 6000 patients annually to achieve these goals.
