About Dr. Skiba
Philip Skiba, DO, is a sports medicine physician at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) who has extensive experience treating amateur, elite, and professional athletes. He joins HSS as the Head Primary Sports Physician for the New York Giants.
Prior to joining HSS, Dr. Skiba was at Thomas Jefferson University from 2024 to 2026, where he architected their new sports performance program and served as Associate Professor, Fellowship Director, and Medical Director. During this time, he also served as a Team Physician for the Philadelphia Phillies and was a company physician for the Philadelphia Ballet.
Previously, Dr. Skiba was the Regional Director of Sports Medicine for Advocate Health Care in Chicago, where he spearheaded the development of three human performance laboratories and a $28 million Sports Health Center. Following the 2012 Olympics, he was recruited to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital as Director of the Sports Medicine fellowship program, and also served as Head Primary Care Team Physician for the University of Illinois at Chicago (NCAA Division 1) and Head Team Physician for Oakton College.
Internationally recognized for his work in human physiology, Dr. Skiba developed the W'-Balance model, a novel mathematical system that fundamentally changed the analysis of human endurance performance. As the Director of Sport and Exercise Medicine at the University of Exeter (UK), his algorithms guided the UK Men's Triathlon Squad to gold and bronze medals at the 2012 London Olympic Games. He subsequently completed his PhD training in Human Physiology at Exeter, publishing several journal articles detailing his algorithms, which have since led to dozens of publications from laboratories around the world.
Unusually for a physician, Dr. Skiba has personally coached dozens of elite endurance athletes, including Olympic medalists, World Champions, and World-Record holders. Most notably, he was recruited by Nike for the Breaking2 project, helping train Eliud Kipchoge, Zersenay Tadese, and Lelisa Desisa in pursuit of the first two-hour marathon. He later appeared in and narrated portions of NatGeo's Cannes Award-Winning documentary, Breaking2.
Dr. Skiba began his academic medical career in the Rutgers Jersey Shore University Medical Center Sports Medicine Fellowship. Today, he is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and serves on the medical boards of both USA Triathlon and USA Cycling. He remains a familiar presence in print and broadcast journalism, regularly contributing to lay and scholarly publications, including Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, The International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance, and Triathlete.
