About Dr. Gupta
Dr. Munish C. Gupta is an internationally renowned orthopaedic spine surgeon with more than 30 years of experience dedicated to the field of complex spinal reconstructive surgery. A distinguished expert in both adult and pediatric spinal deformities, Dr. Gupta specializes in repairing conditions such as scoliosis, kyphosis, spondylolisthesis, and flatback syndrome. His exceptional surgical skill and compassionate, patient-centered care have helped thousands of patients around the world reclaim mobility, relieve pain, and return to active, fulfilling lives.
Dr. Gupta earned his BA/MD through Northwestern University's Honors Program in Medical Education, followed by orthopaedic residency at Northwestern University and a fellowship in complex spinal surgery at the Leatherman Spine Center in Louisville, Kentucky. He began his academic career at the University of California, Irvine, and Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, before joining the University of California, Davis, where he served as Chief of Spine Surgery and Co-Director of the Spine Center, building one of the nation's premier programs for complex spinal reconstruction. In 2015, he was appointed Chief of Spinal Surgery and Professor of Orthopaedic and Neurological Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, where he continued to expand his clinical and research leadership.
A trailblazer in spinal deformity research, Dr. Gupta serves as Principal Investigator of the Fox Study Group, overseeing the world's largest database of pediatric spinal curves exceeding 100 degrees and congenital spine deformity. He is also an active member of the International Spine Study Group, AO Spine Knowledge Forum on Deformity, and the Harms Study Group, advancing global collaboration and innovation in spinal alignment, surgical techniques, and outcomes research.
Dr. Gupta has published more than 350 peer-reviewed papers, edited five books, authored 63 book chapters, and presented his research at over 1,000 national and international meetings. His contributions have shaped modern approaches to spinal reconstruction , helped design spinal instrumentation and influenced practice patterns across the world.
Recognized among Best Doctors in America since 2009, Dr. Gupta is celebrated not only for his surgical excellence but also for his mentorship, academic leadership, and enduring commitment to improving the quality of life for patients with spinal deformities. He completed his MBA in 2023, graduating Beta Gamma Sigma with distinction.
Currently serving as Vice President of the Scoliosis Research Society, Dr. Gupta is in the presidential line to become President in 2027.
