About Dr. Powell
Dr. Joshua Powell is a diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal radiologist, serving as an Attending Radiologist at the Hospital for Special Surgery and Assistant Professor of Radiology at Weill Cornell Medicine. He specializes in advanced diagnostic musculoskeletal imaging—including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), ultrasonography, and radiography—as well as image-guided musculoskeletal and spine interventions.
Dr. Powell earned his Bachelor of Science in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology with minors in Environmental Health and Microbiology from the University of Washington before attending Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He went on to complete his residency in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), where he received the Education Fund Award for scoring in the top 5% nationally on the radiology in-training examination. During residency, he was also selected as one of only 35 national participants in the Association of Academic Radiology Resident Academic Leadership Development Program. Dr. Powell then completed his fellowship in Musculoskeletal Imaging and Intervention at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard University program, where he was honored with the Golden Fabellita – MSK Lecture of the Year Award for his presentation on throwing injuries of the elbow.
Dr. Powell has particular clinical and research interests in sports-related injuries and interventional spine care. He is highly proficient in diagnostic MRI, CT, and ultrasound and is skilled in a wide range of interventional musculoskeletal procedures, including ultrasound-guided joint, bursa, and tendon sheath injections. In addition, he performs CT- and fluoroscopic-guided spine procedures such as facet, medial branch, sacroiliac, and epidural injections, as well as ablative procedures.
