About Dr. Kim
Dr. Jaeyoung Kim is an orthopedic surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) specializing in foot and ankle surgery. He treats a wide range of conditions, including sports and traumatic injuries, tendon disorders, arthritis and fractures. Dr. Kim has a specialized focus on joint-preserving surgery, ankle arthritis, and the correction of complex deformities. Dedicated to advancing evidence-based medicine through both research and clinical practice, Dr. Kim prioritizes a highly personalized approach to patient care. His ultimate goal is to safely restore alignment and function while preserving the native joint whenever possible.
After earning his medical degree, completing his orthopedic residency, and achieving board certification in South Korea, Dr. Kim served as a captain in the Republic of Korea Air Force and Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at an armed forces hospital. Relocating to the United States, Dr. Kim dedicated over three years as a research fellow with the Foot and Ankle Service at HSS. He then pursued advanced clinical training through prestigious foot and ankle fellowships at Baylor University Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, and HSS. He is currently an active member of the AOFAS Research Committee and serves on the Board of the International Weight Bearing CT Society.

Research
Research has been a driving force throughout Dr. Kim's career and a key reason he pursued several years of advanced training and research in the United States. He believes that rigorous research is essential to advancing the understanding of disease, refining treatment strategies, and improving patient outcomes.
Dr. Kim's research focuses on the role of lower-extremity alignment in the development, progression, and treatment of foot and ankle conditions. He is particularly interested in understanding how overall limb alignment, three-dimensional foot and ankle alignment, and joint orientation influence ankle arthritis, foot and ankle deformity, and outcomes following reconstructive and joint-preserving procedures. His research also examines how lower-extremity alignment may contribute to the development of sports-related foot and ankle injuries and influence treatment outcomes and prognosis. By integrating clinical outcomes, advanced imaging, and biomechanical analysis, he seeks to develop more individualized approaches to injury prevention, surgical planning, deformity correction, and joint preservation.
Dr. Kim has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and has presented his research nationally and internationally. His contributions to research have been recognized with several awards, including the J. Leonard Goldner, MD Award from the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS), the Best Paper Award from the European Foot and Ankle Society (EFAS), the Best Trainee Award from the International Federation of Foot and Ankle Societies (IFFAS), and the Lance Peters, MD, Memorial Biomechanics Award from HSS. He also received the AAOS Annual Meeting Top Poster Award and was selected for the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS)/AOFAS Clinician Scholar Career Development Program.
