About Dr. Summers

Dr. Spencer Summers is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive, complex, and revision hip and knee replacements. He has a particular interest in anterior hip replacement, hip resurfacing, robotic-assisted or computer-navigated surgeries, and revision hip and knee replacements. His philosophy for patient care is to always start with the most simple or conservative approach and to treat patients as he would treat his own family. He tries to understand the goals of each patient and how their hip or knee disorder hinders them from achieving their best life. By working together, Dr. Summers and his patients will create a unique, patient-centered treatment plan to help the patient achieve their goals.

At Vanderbilt University, Dr. Summers graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with honors in Spanish and Pre-medical studies. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine where he graduated at the top of his class and was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. After medical school he remained at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital for his residency training in Orthopedic Surgery. In his residency, he was elected chief administrative resident by his peers and deemed an Emerging Leader by the American Orthopedic Association. Dr. Summers concluded his training at the prestigious Washington University in St. Louis where he completed his fellowship in hip and knee preservation, resurfacing and replacement.

Dr. Summers is passionate about utilizing research and technology to further the field of hip and knee replacement and improve patient outcomes. He has published his research in leading, peer-reviewed journals such as The Bone and Joint Journal, the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, as well as the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. His research has been presented at regional, national and international meetings and he has won numerous research awards. He is a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.

A native of South Florida, Dr. Summers attended Saint Andrew's High School where he competed in soccer and lacrosse. When not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, playing soccer, and staying active.
