Research

As an academic orthopaedic surgeon and orthopaedic educator, an area of significant research interest for me is on optimization of learning, professional growth and leadership development in orthopaedic residents. I have published previous studies on optimization of training through simulation as well as feasibility of surgical assessment metrics for trainees. My research philosophy is that we need a data driven approach to understanding how trainees learn, how they optimize communication in medicine and how they develop into competent and ethically sound medical professionals. Another area of research interest is evaluating how the lack of racial and gender diversity in orthopaedic surgery impacts the working and training environment among orthopaedic surgeons. I have ongoing research in the following areas:

Profiling of Orthopaedic Surgery Trainees (POST) Research Group
PROJECT/ROLE: I am the primary investigator and founder of the research study group called POST (Profiling of Orthopaedic Surgery Trainees) that will be prospectively evaluating the cognitive characteristics of orthopaedic residents at 12 residency programs. The purpose of the study group is to evaluate the personality traits, learning preferences, leadership traits and perceived stress of residents through validated psychosocial measures. The study is current in year two of data enrollment. The POST study will run from late 2020 through 2026 with several planned collaborative publications over the course of enrollment.

Stereotype Threat Among Orthopaedic Residents
PROJECT/ROLE: I am the primary investigator in a OREF grant supported study which surveys the impact of racial and/or gender stereotype threat among orthopaedic trainees using the Stereotype Vulnerability Scale. The study is through its enrollment phase and is currently in data analysis. The study will run from July 2021 through June 2022.
