About Dr. Malhotra

loading...

Dr. Malhotra is Director of the Pain Management Division at HSS. He treats many acute and chronic pain conditions including sports injury, neck pain, back pain, spine pain, herniated disc, sciatica, joint pain, arthritis, nerve pain, muscle strain, tendonitis, CRPS (complex regional pain syndrome), hypermobility syndrome, and chronic pain after orthopedic surgery. He has a particular interest in interventional-based therapies using ultrasound and X-ray guidance to diagnose and treat pain with minimally invasive, highly-targeted techniques. These include epidural steroid injection, medial branch and facet joint block, radiofrequency ablation, sympathetic block, joint and bursa injection, viscosupplementation (gel), tendon and muscle injection, botox, PRP (platelet rich plasma), nerve block, pulsed radiofrequency, and spinal cord and dorsal root ganglion stimulation. In addition to procedural interventions, Dr. Malhotra strives to optimize medication regimens and physical therapy using evidence-based guidelines to return patients to their maximum level of functioning.

Dr. Malhotra completed his undergraduate studies in neuroscience at Yale University, after which he attended Duke University School of Medicine and then completed residency and subspecialty fellowship training in anesthesiology and pain management at the University of California, San Francisco and Stanford University. In addition to merit scholarships and inclusion in honor societies during his training (Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega), he received the Mark Rosen Resident Scholarship award from UCSF, was named Chief Fellow at Stanford, and received the Junior Faculty Educator award at Mount Sinai. He is board certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine and has practiced in New York since 2012. Prior to joining the Hospital for Special Surgery, Dr. Malhotra was the Associate Program Director for the Pain Medicine fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and was also the Pain Division Director of Scheduling and Site Utilization for the Mount Sinai Health System.

Dr. Malhotra takes great pride in providing compassionate, thorough, and personalized care for his patients. He has been recognized for these efforts by his peers and has regularly been included in various best doctors publications including Castle Connolly, Super Doctors, and New York Magazine. Dr. Malhotra has also published multiple peer-reviewed journal articles, reviews, chapters, and most recently edited a textbook on pain medicine. He has presented lectures, posters, and workshops on these topics for local and national societies including the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the New York Society of Anesthesiologists, and the New York Society of Interventional Pain Physicians. He is very interested in emerging therapies and frequently incorporates them into his practice to help patients failing traditional medical treatment.
