Orthopedic Surgery


Dr. Leali has served as Medical Director of the Adult Ambulatory Care Center at Hospital for Special Surgery since 2006. Throughout his career in medicine, Dr. Alejandro Leali has developed strong clinical interests in the treatment of avascular necrosis and in the areas of hip and knee reconstruction. Trained in orthopedic surgery, as well as in physical medicine and rehabilitation (physiatry), Dr. Leali focuses on both the operative and non-operative treatment of orthopedic conditions, allowing him a cumulative understanding of the patient experience.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. Leali earned his medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires and continued his orthopedic surgical training in the city until traveling to Boston to complete an internship at Carney Hospital.

Following his time in Boston, Dr. Leali continued his medical education in New York, completing a residency in physical medicine & rehabilitation at the prestigious Rusk Institute at New York University Medical Center (NYUMC), and later furthering his postgraduate medical training by completing a clinical research fellowship in hip and knee reconstruction at NYUMC.

He has received a number of research grants and has conducted clinical trials regarding such conditions as DVT prophylaxis after joint replacements, avascular necrosis of the hip, and cementless total hip replacements. Additionally, his research has been internationally recognized; Dr. Leali has received awards from the Japanese Orthopedic Association, Société Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie (SICOT), and New York University.

Dr. Leali is a peer reviewer for several medical journals, including the prestigious Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research, and is a corresponding member for International Orthopedics.
