About

Dr. Alejandro Leali has served as Medical Director of the Adult Ambulatory Care Center at Hospital for Special Surgery since 2006. Throughout his career in medicine, Dr. Leali has developed strong clinical interests in the treatment of avascular necrosis and in the areas of hip and knee reconstruction. Trained in orthopedic surgery, as well as in physiatry, Dr. Leali focuses on both the operative and non-operative treatment of orthopedic conditions, allowing him a cumulative understanding of the orthopedic patient.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. Leali earned his medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires and continued his orthopedic surgical training in the city until traveling to Boston to complete an internship in Medicine and Surgery at Carney Hospital (Boston University).

Following his time in Boston, Dr. Leali furthered his postgraduate orthopedic surgery education at New York University Medical Center (NYUMC) by completing a clinical research fellowship in Hip and Knee reconstruction.

He has received a number of research grants and has conducted clinical trials regarding such conditions as DVT prophylaxis after joint replacements, avascular necrosis of the hip, preservation of bone stock after cementless total hip replacements. Additionally, his research has been internationally recognized; Dr. Leali has received awards from the Japanese Orthopedic Association, Société Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie (SICOT), and New York University.

Dr. Leali is a peer reviewer for several medical journals, including Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research and International Orthopedics and currently serves as Associate Senior Editor of the HSS Journal.

Dr. Leali is part of the teaching faculty at HSS and is deeply involved in the education of future generations of orthopedic surgeons. Dr. Leali focuses his teaching in the acquisition of surgical skills and general orthopedic knowledge early on in their careers.
