Daily Burn—October 2, 2017

Daily Burn featured HSS exercise physiologist Pamela Geisel MS, CSCS in an article about metabolic conditioning (metcon) workouts.

Geisel said a bonus benefit of metcon workouts is that, by placing large demands on your body’s energy systems, they burn calories at a high rate.

To plan the perfect metcon workout, Geisel said lower work-to-rest ratios are ideal for developing power, and higher ratios are best for improving endurance. She added that mid-level ratios help develop areas of activity that involve some rest, such as powerlifting and sports like baseball.

Geisel said metcon workouts are best served as a 5 to 10 minute finisher at the end of a strength training routine.
