HSS Patient Experience Surveys and Ratings

Overall HSS Patient Rating

HSS has been measuring the experience of our patients to ensure that we provide outstanding care and service. Sharing our patient experience performance with the public is part of our quality mission. This information highlights our patients’ satisfaction levels with their physicians and showcases why you should choose HSS for your musculoskeletal care.

About the survey

HSS measures many aspects of our patients’ experience using the nationally-recognized Press Ganey patient satisfaction survey. Each year over 15,000 HSS patients offer feedback about their experience with inpatient surgery, ambulatory surgery and physician practices. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score.

How are the patient experience star ratings created?

The patient experience star rating reflects patients’ satisfaction levels with their physicians after their office visit or surgery. Star ratings are calculated based on two dimensions:

  1. Skill of physician
  2. Friendliness and courtesy of physician

The physician's star rating is an average rating across these two dimensions over a rolling 3-year time period. A physician needs 30 or more ratings to have their average rating displayed on the website. The service star rating is an aggregate of all the physicians in that service. The overall hospital rating is an aggregate of all patient ratings.
