When I went to HSS, my diagnosis in Peru was the same that Dr. Russell Huang confirmed: spondylolisthesis with stenosis (of the spinal canal). There also was L4-L5 and L5-S1 instability, permanent back pain, and it was impossible for me to walk more than 10 meters without pain, so I decided to undergo surgery. The procedure is called lumbar fusion. Four days after surgery I was discharged and I was able to walk with the aid of a cane. Six days after surgery I was able to walk on the street for one hour, rest, and continue walking for long periods of time. I went back to Peru, using the cane as a precautionary measure for 1 week, and later I did not need it. Now I am coming back for follow up after three months. I am not yet medically cleared to bend over, turn to the sides, or carry more than 2 kilos weight. I was given instructions by physical therapists on how to wake up and lie down, and walk.

My surgical procedure was wonderful. Now my physical activity has returned to normal. I am thankful for Katherine, Maria Elena, and the international team, who helped me with the appointment, insurance, and everything related to HSS.
