Summer Internship


The Women's Sports Medicine Center at Hospital for Special Surgery sponsors internships for students interested in the field of sports medicine with a special focus on active and athletic women. The internship is a full-time, 8-week diverse summer experience. Interns will shadow all members of our healthcare team with exposure to primary sports medicine, orthopedic surgery, physiatry, sports nutrition, sports performance, sports physical therapy, and sports psychology.

There are 3 tracks, each with a specific focus:

Track 1
Sports Medicine

 

This internship will focus on the medical and surgical treatment of sports related injuries and conditions. The intern will spend the majority of time shadowing the primary sports medicine physicians, orthopedic surgeons, and our physiatrist, with some exposure to sports nutrition, exercise physiology, sports physical therapy, and sports psychology.

Applicants must have completed their first year of medical school.

Track 2
Sports Rehab, Nutrition & Performance


This internship will focus on sports physical therapy, sports performance and sports nutrition. The intern will spend the majority of time shadowing physical therapists, exercise physiologists and sports nutritionists. There will be some exposure to primary sports medicine, orthopedic surgery, and physiatry, including some opportunities for shadowing the WSMC physicians both in the clinic and in the OR.

Applicants must have completed their Junior year of college and maintain a GPA of ≥3.5.

Track 3
Sports Medicine Pre-med

 

This internship is geared towards pre-med students and offers exposure to the range of disciplines involved in treating the female athlete. The intern will spend time shadowing each member of the Women's Sports Medicine Center including primary sports medicine physicians, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, exercise physiologists, a sports nutritionist, and a sports psychologist.

Applicants must have completed their Junior year of college and maintain a GPA of ≥3.5. Curriculum should be compatible with the requirements for medical school acceptance.

 

Interns in all tracks will be responsible for the completion of a project and may be involved in educational outreach on behalf of the Women's Sports Medicine Center. Interns will also have the opportunity to assist in various ongoing research projects.

  • Interns will receive a stipend of $2000 for the 8 week internship
  • Dates of Internship: June 3 - July 26, 2024
  • Housing is not provided
