Sports Medicine Medical Student Mentorship and Research Program

The HSS Sports Medicine Institute (SMI) invites medical students taking a research year between their 3rd and 4th year of medical school to apply to the Sports Medicine Medical Student Mentorship and Research Program at Hospital for Special Surgery. The Sports Medicine Medical Student Mentorship and Research Program is a one year program designed to introduce medical students to formal training in all aspects of sports medicine research, including, but not limited to, clinical shadowing opportunities, mentored research in clinical, registry, basic science and translational research projects, attendance at weekly lectures/ presentations, and shadowing of attendings. Students will work closely with and report directly to a sports medicine physician (Principal Investigator) and collaborate with investigators (Co-PIs) within the SMI.  

Eligibility 

This program is open to students who have completed three years at an accredited US medical school and are taking a research year or gap year between their 3rd and 4th year. Preference will be given to highly motivated medical students who are applying for residency in orthopaedic surgery. Applicants are required to submit a cover letter expressing their interest in this program, a CV, and one letter of recommendation. 

Start Date: July 2024

Duration: 1 year (July 2024-July 2025) 

Stipend: $15,000
