Dr. Pantelis Pavlakis is a physician-scientist, board certified in neurology and neuromuscular medicine. He has clinical expertise in neuromuscular diseases, in particular, immune-mediated neuromuscular syndromes and neurologic complications of systemic autoimmune and rheumatic diseases. He evaluates patients with selected general neurologic conditions and performs nerve conduction studies and needle EMG for patients with neuromuscular diseases.
Dr. Pavlakis received his medical degree from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. He then pursued a PhD at the same institution, studying the pathogenetic mechanisms of immune-mediated neuropathies and neuropathies associated with Sjogren's syndrome. He completed his residency in neurology at Boston University, and came to Hospital for Special Surgery to pursue a fellowship in Neuromuscular Medicine, followed by another fellowship in Advanced Neuromuscular Medicine and Autoimmune Neurology.
His research includes clinical and translational research projects, focusing on immune responses and cell signaling pathways in motor neuron disease, biomarkers of immune-mediated neuropathies' response to treatment, as well as immune mechanisms of small fiber neuropathies and neuromuscular complications of systemic autoimmune diseases.

Dr. Pavlakis' research interests involve the intersection between neuromuscular diseases and immunology, such as immune-mediated neurological syndromes, and especially clinical and immunological aspects of neurologic manifestations of systemic autoimmune diseases.
Specific research projects include cell signaling pathways and immune responses in motor
neuron disease, electrophysiological and immunological predictors of immune-mediated neuropathies responsiveness to treatment, pathogenesis of immune-mediated neuropathies, and pathogenesis of small fiber neuropathies.
