The Healthcare & Life Sciences 50

Irish America Magazine—August 29, 2017

Irish America Magazine published its annual list of Healthcare & Life Sciences 50 honorees, which includes Irish-American innovators who are leading the way in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. HSS sports medicine surgeon Moira M. McCarthy, MD and HSS foot and ankle surgeon John G. Kennedy, MD are featured as honorees for 2017.

According to the article, Dr. Kennedy is a Dublin native and is actively involved in basic science investigations at HSS. His goal is to establish HSS as a world leader in ankle cartilage regeneration, and he has been collaborating with numerous international universities to achieve this goal. "The world is getting to be a smaller place. Medical problems are universal but often were approached in a regional manner. International collaboration, sharing knowledge for the common good is truly the only way forward," said Dr. Kennedy.

Dr. McCarthy is a third-generation Irish American with ties on both sides of her family. After completing her resident training at HSS, Dr. McCarthy spent time in Australia and France, learning alongside leading sports medicine surgeons how to better repair damage to the knees and shoulders of injured athletes. According to the article, Dr. McCarthy is passionate about the importance of customized care for patients, including non-surgical treatment alternatives for those with knee and shoulder injuries.

This article appeared in the August/September 2017 print issue.
