Classification Criteria for Gout

Dr. Theodore Fields, rheumatologist and director of rheumatology faculty practice plan at Hospital for Special Surgery, is featured in MD Insights program "The 'Disease of Kings': Addressing Misperceptions and Treating Gout Effectively Now and in the Future".

In the series, Dr. Fields discusses gout diagnosis, misperceptions about the disease, consequences of undertreatment, current gout treatment options and potential future treatments.

"Gout is a curable disease and it's really important to diagnosis it as soon as we can," says Dr. Fields. "Gradually, we’re developing better diagnostic criteria that allow us to make a clear diagnosis of gout even in cases where we don't have the crystal."
