Hospital for Special Surgery-Stamford Health collaboration ahead of schedule

Fairfield County Business Journal—June 30, 2017

Fairfield County Business Journal featured HSS hip & knee surgeon Charles N. Cornell, MD speaking about the collaboration between HSS and Stamford Health as HSS Orthopedics at Stamford Health prepares to move to the fifth floor of the new Stamford Hospital.

According to Dr. Cornell, who is also chair of the new Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Stamford Health, ambulatory procedures have grown in volume each month since the beginning of the collaboration in April. In addition, Dr. Cornell recently introduced a new approach called "pre-op optimization" to reduce the time of medical clearance while preparing for elective surgery. Dr. Cornell said this approach "can cut down complications and avoid unanticipated cancellation of surgery on the day of."

When discussing the newly constructed fifth floor of Stamford Hospital for HSS Orthopedics, Dr. Cornell said, "It’s pretty incredible to have a brand new building in modern health care in America. Everything is brand new, there’s been no chance of contamination. It’s the perfect situation for us."

According to the article, construction is ahead of schedule and the fifth floor should be ready to open by November 1st.

The floor will open with two operating rooms but is expected to expand to six in a short period of time to see a total volume of 1,500 cases a year.

"We’re hoping that we can establish a foothold in the marketplace and rapidly grow," said Dr. Cornell. "We fully expect to be the busiest center in the state for orthopedics."
