Dr. Jessica R. Berman enjoys caring for patients with a variety of autoimmune and rheumatic diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus, sarcoidosis, Sjogren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic and seronegative arthritis, and mixed, overlap and undifferentiated cconnective tissue diseases.
Dr. Berman co-founded the HSS Academy of Rheumatology Medical Educators with Dr. Stephen Paget in 2011. This aims to establish a stimulating and empowering academic educational environment that enhances the quality of teaching and promotes teaching careers and education research. Through the money raised by the Academy, funding of important education initiatives and programs in the department are made possible.
She received the American College of Rheumatology Clinician Scholar Educator Award from the Rheumatology Research Foundation in 2009, has taken on leadership roles on several Education committees with the American College of Rheumatology and won several teaching awards. Her education research has focused on the assessment of professionalism using an interprofessional OSCE and the development of Academies of Medical Education to foster education scholarship and advance educators’ careers.

Prepare for your appointment by completing the New Patient Forms. We ask that you please bring them with you to the appointment filled out and completed. The more information we have for the initial consult, the more productive your visit will be.
Living, traveling and working in New York City is usually not so easy. I am well aware of this. Occasionally we run behind for reasons that are not always under our control. Dr. Berman may run late in practice because of emergencies, although this is rare.
In an effort to be fair to all patients (including those who are on time), if you are late for an appointment we will try to accommodate you at the earliest possible time. However, follow-up patients who were on time for their appointments will be seen first. Sometimes, you may find it preferable to reschedule an appointment rather than wait. However, please be sure to make the nurse know if you are having an emergency so we can handle the problem immediately. New patients who are greater than 15 minutes will not be seen and must be rescheduled to allow enough time for a full history and physical exam.
If you are unable to attend your appointment, please call and cancel within 24 hours so that the appointment can be offered to someone else. Persistent failure to attend the appointments that are booked and excessively cancelled will lead us to consider whether we can continue to reschedule your appointment.
