Preventing Blood Clots - Surgical Guide to Right Total Shoulder Replacement

Orthopedic surgery patients are at risk for blood clots. While the risks are low following shoulder surgery, signs of blood clots may include calf pain or cramping, chest pain, and shortness of breath. The clot can travel to the lungs where it may cause additional symptoms.

To prevent and reduce the risk of a blood clot, walk frequently and perform your exercises as instructed. In some cases, your personal risk profile may determine that you need to take medication to help prevent blood clots. Please inform your doctor if you plan on traveling immediately after your surgery so additional medication may be prescribed as necessary.
