Getting a Leg Up on Knee Pain

Autumn Years—December 14, 2015

Geoffrey H. Westrich, MD, a hip and knee surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery, contributed to the winter edition of Autumn Years, a New Jersey-based magazine written for the over-60 population in Bergen County. Dr. Westrich wrote an article about arthritic knee pain and strategies that provide relief from such pain.

According to the article, Dr. Westrich recommends the following to relieve arthritis pain:

  • Be careful not to overdo physical activities, and avoid any action, such as climbing up and down stairs, that may aggravate an arthritic knee.
  • Try to keep your weight down to avoid stress on the joint, or lose weight if you are overweight. Losing weight takes pressure off the knee and may slow the progression of arthritis.
