ACGME Chief Resident Leadership Skills Training Program Recipient
The HSS Alumni Association Professional Leadership Education Scholarship funded my participation in the ACGME Multi-Specialty Chief Resident Leadership Skills Training Program. The course consisted of an intensive three day interactive curriculum with 48 chief residents from different specialties across the country and was moderated by an experienced physician executive. Through both self and group learning, the course covered important topics such as group interactions, situational leadership, Myers Briggs Type Indicator for personality differences, Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument for conflict resolution, and stress resiliency. In addition, specific workshops were dedicated to the mastery of specific chief resident responsibilities including conflict resolution strategies, managing stress, delegating tasks, understanding personality differences, and optimizing interactions with other medical specialties and hospital administrators. These skills will undoubtedly improve my ability to serve as an effective chief resident and future orthopaedic surgeon in an academic environment. This course was well structured, time efficient, eye-opening, and fostered learning from both the moderator as well as fellow participants. I am incredibly grateful to the Alumni Association for this unique opportunity.
