Sports and physical activities provide people of all ages with health benefits that can last a lifetime. Unfortunately, these benefits come with the risk of injury. Experts estimate that more than half of the seven million sports- and recreation-related injuries that occur each year are sustained by people between the ages 5 and 24.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that more than half of these injuries are preventable with proper resources and training, but programs that teach stakeholders how to reduce the risk of injury are often expensive or not widely available. So, we’ve made it one of our top priorities at HSS to provide free or low-cost resources that can help reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injury.
After launching in 2016, the Youth Sports Safety Program at HSS has delivered hundreds of on-site injury prevention workshops for children and their parents, coaches, teachers, and sports administrators throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Florida. The program’s Learning Center debuted in 2018, providing free on-demand injury prevention workshops and resources to anyone, anywhere. In 2020, the program began offering virtual workshops to allow us to reach children and their coaches, parents, and teachers throughout the United States and around the world. And in 2021, injury prevention screenings became a key component of our offerings so that we can help identify injury risk factors among youth sports participants.
