Hurrah for Whole Grains!

Whole grains include all three parts of a grain kernel: the bran, germ and endosperm.

Whole grain foods are made with all three of these grain components. Eating whole grains provide wonderful health benefits. Whole grains are great because:

  • Reduce the risk for several chronic diseases
  • Help with weight maintenance

Refined grain foods have been made once the grain has been milled, which is a process that removes the bran and the germ portions and leaves only the endosperm. This process removes important nutrients such as vitamin B, iron and dietary fiber.
