Dr. John Kennedy graduated from Royal College of Surgeons in 1989 and has since practiced in both Ireland and the US. He specializes in osteochondral injuries, Achilles tendon injuries, ankle instability, and ligament reconstruction and arthroscopic minimally invasive techniques. He has a primary interest in lower limb surgery, particularly sports-related injuries. He is board certified by the Royal College of Surgeons in orthopaedic surgery, general surgery, and trauma surgery and has recently been awarded his third post doctoral degree in Sports and Exercise Medicine.

Dr. Kennedy is the current co-chairman of the International Society on Cartilage Repair of the Ankle (ISCRA). The recent meeting of ISCRA in UPMC Pittsburgh was the largest international consensus meeting on ankle cartilage in the world. As a result of this meeting, new guidelines for diagnosis, treatment, and rehab have been instituted globally.

Dr. Kennedy has presented in over 30 countries on the topic of cartilage injuries alone and is regarded as a leader in this field. He also has a long tradition of teaching students, residents and fellows from over 40 different countries. Part of this teaching has led to great surgical innovation, particularly in the area of minimally invasive techniques and biologic augmentation.

Dr. Kennedy’s interest in sports medicine of the lower limb is generated by a long personal history in sports, where he competed at national and international levels in track, rugby, fencing, and water skiing. As part of his fellowship year, Dr. Kennedy was involved as an Assistant Team Physician to Boston College Football in 1994-95. Since then, he has been involved in the treatment of both recreational athletes as well as elite athletes from the New York Giants, New York Metro Stars, Manhattan Rugby, the National Basketball Players Association, the National Basketball Referees Association, and the National Hockey League Players Association.

His involvement in all aspects of lower limb sports injuries has led Dr. Kennedy to publish articles on soccer injuries, running injuries, cycling injuries, ballet injuries, osteochondral defects, and ankle instability following sports injuries. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles.

Research Description

Dr Kennedy has research collaborations from all over the world. Biomechanical and Basic Science research on Cartilage and Tendon injuries is carried out in Cornell University. His team has recently produced a 3D printed model of a biocomposite with live cells that will fill osteochondral defects of the Ankle. Clinical research is ongoing at HSS in areas of cartilage injury, minimally invasive arthroscopic surgeries and tendon injuries.
