Worth the Trip: A World Traveler Has Her Hips Replaced After Osteoarthritis

World traveled writer/photographer Sonja Lowenfish journeyed to Western China only five months after Mathias P. Bostrom, MD, attending orthopedic surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery, replaced each of her hips – both damaged by osteoarthritis (OA)

The surgeries were only a month apart. Recalls Ms. Lowenfish, “I like Dr. Bostrom – I just told him what I needed to do and he said we can do that.”

Since then, Ms. Lowenfish, has followed the Silk Road on camel, by train, and in rickety cars. “When I left the States, I left my walking stick behind,” says Ms. Lowenfish, 69, who makes her home in Florida.
