Everyday Health reports on fatigue as a debilitating symptom of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Some factors that can contribute to fatigue include inflammation, pain and stiffness and spinal deformities.
Randall Pifer, PT, DPT, physical therapist at HSS, says its important to maintain good posture regardless of if you are standing or sitting. He notes that the more you practice good habits, the better you'll be if AS progresses. "If you can build up strength, that's the best way to fend off fatigue when flares rear their ugly head."
Rupali Soeters, PT, PhD, physical therapist at HSS, recommends working with a nutritionist to devise a high-energy, anti-inflammatory diet. "For me, that's eating lots of protein and avoiding sugar." Finding and maintaining your ideal weight is also important. "Any additional weight on the spine is adding to your fatigue", she adds.
