Today in Health History: Special Surgery

On this date in 1863, the first orthopedic hospital was incorporated. Now known as the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, the Hospital for Ruptured and Crippled opened on May 1 under the direction of Dr. James Knight. This teaching hospital was well known for the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, including arthritis, spina bifida, osteoporosis, cerebral palsy and spine and sports injuries. The physicians at Hospital for Special Surgery are among the most qualified in the world, and the hospital is considered one of America's best.
