Are 'Fasted' Workouts Better For You?

Refinery29 reports on the 'fasted' workout trend, which is when you work out on an empty stomach.

Tiffany Chag, MS, RD, CSCS, sports performance specialist and sports dietician at HSS, explains that typically your muscles get energy from carbohydrates in food. Your body runs out of those sources when you first wake up after a night of sleep.

"If you haven't eaten, your body will have to go find fuel, and it'll go to fat for fuel," she says, explaining that over time, your body will learn to prioritize fat over other sources of food.

While there are benefits, this type of workout isn't for everyone and it's best to find a workout that fits your own lifestyle.
