"We've become so used to doing things on our own that asking for help has become misconstrued with being weak," explains Deborah N. Roche, PhD, clinical psychologist at HSS.

She discusses how managing daily stress and making short-term goals can make a long recovery seem more manageable.

It's also important to remember that eventually you will be back to your normal self. "Frame it in a way that you can feel empowered - this isn't a permanent state of affairs, it's temporary," says Dr. Roche.
