Flight Risk - 2017

Palos Citizen—October 12, 2017

Palos Citizen featured HSS rheumatologist Anne R. Bass, MD in an article about the risk of forming blood clots in your legs, also known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), during air travel.

Dr. Bass said "the risk of a DVT is extremely small for the general population, but as many as 1 in 100 people with risk factors may experience it."

According to the article, risk factors include a previous history of blood clots, recent surgery and inflammatory diseases. To reduce your risk, the article recommended to get out of your seat every 15 minutes and to stay hydrated.

This article appeared in the October 12, 2017 print issue.
