The Ambulatory Orthopedic Surgery Landscape

Orthopedic Network News (ONN) featured HSS chief value medical officer Catherine H. MacLean, MD, PhD, in an article about ambulatory orthopedic surgical procedures.

According to the article, HSS performs the largest volume of orthopedic surgical cases in the world and over half are performed on an ambulatory basis.

Since the most serious complications in total joint arthroplasty typically occur within the first two to three days but can be difficult to predict, HSS has been cautious in wholesale shifting of joint replacements to the ambulatory setting and therefore will be evaluating whether these ambulatory procedures can be done safely.

Additionally, ONN reported that HSS holds the number one spot on the Top 10 Medicare Hip and Knee Replacement Hospitals (2016-2017) list as well as the Top 10 U.S. Hospitals with Medicare "DRG-Payment" Hip and Knee Replacement Procedures (2017) list.
