Orthopedic Network News—October 31, 2017
Orthopedic Network News (ONN) featured HSS surgeon-in-chief Todd J. Albert, MD and HSS chief of Spine Service Frank Schwab, MD in an article about the trends and challenges that surgeon leaders face in their spine programs.
Dr. Albert discussed how advancements in minimally invasive surgery and robotic surgery are allowing more procedures to be done on an outpatient basis, but there are higher costs associated with the technologies.
Dr. Schwab said one of the biggest opportunities for improved efficiency in spine care is for clinicians to understand the drivers of cost, length of stay, and good as well as poor outcomes.
The article reported that HSS created a Fast-Track program to provide patients a rapid and cost effective pathway for care.
Additionally, ONN reported that HSS holds the number two spot on the Top 10 U.S. Hospitals with Medicare “DRG-Payment” Spine Cases (2016) list.
