NBC New York—February 17, 2018
NBC New York reported on the rising opioid addiction among young, injured athletes.
According to a study by the University of Michigan, 15 percent of athletes in contact sports have used opioids for pain management.
The segment reported that a number of athletes feel pressure to stay on the field. Once they are injured or feel pain, they self-medicate with opioids to avoid missing a game.
HSS pediatric orthopedic surgeon Peter D. Fabricant, MD, MPH urged parents and coaches to be more involved in properly managing an injured athlete’s pain.
