An Athlete's Youth and Beyond

MSG aired part five of the miniseries, HSS Sports Performance Lab, featuring the importance of preparing young athletes in injury prevention.

Lisa R. Callahan, MD, primary care sports medicine physician at HSS and Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of Player Care at Madison Square Garden Sports, explained that children shouldn't specialize in a single sport at a young age.

"One of the things we see commonly in youth athletes is overuse injuries. So we end up talking to them about the quality of their practice, not just quantity, and having a variety of activities," said Brett G. Toresdahl, MD, primary care sports medicine physician at HSS and team physician for the Westchester Knicks.

"They often become better athletes overall and they're going to be able to enjoy sports for their lifetime and have a more successful career because they're going to be less limited by injuries along the way," added Dr. Toresdahl.

"For kids, it should be about play, it should be about fun," Dr. Callahan said.
