Sideline Data – The ACL Injury

League Appsreports on ACL tears in high-performing athletes. Due to advancements in surgical technology and rehabilitation, ACL sprains and tears have become manageable injuries.

In a recent podcast episode of ‘Sideline Data’, they interview Riley J. Williams III, MD, sports medicine surgeon at HSS, to learn more about medical breakthroughs.

"I don’t even know that we used the word dreaded anymore… when I trained in the early ‘90s, it was the dreaded ACL tear because there really wasn’t a whole lot from an operative standpoint that represented a true anatomic reconstruction," explains Dr. Williams.

"So I think the big breakthrough is two-fold. Number one, our technology has gotten a lot better. Arthroscopy is a much more minimally invasive surgery with less trauma to the knee. We’ve gotten better technically with regards to our instrumentation that allows us to access parts of the knee in a minimally invasive fashion and allows us to more accurately mimic the insertion sites of the ACL ligament. And then finally, our realizations about movement and not immobilizing joints as being healthy and restorative joints really helped move things along,"  says Dr. Williams.
