Why Hospital for Special Surgery Plans to Share its Knowledge Globally

Hospitals & Health Networks—January 23, 2017

Hospitals & Health Networks conducts a Q&A interview with Louis A. Shapiro, president and CEO of Hospital for Special Surgery.

He speaks to H&HN about the new role of chief value medical officer, why HSS' readmission rates are continually below the national average and how HSS plans to share its knowledge on a global scale.

"We’ve created what we refer to as the HSS global innovation institute. There, we are identifying innovations in life sciences, which include both drugs and devices, as well as innovations in care delivery so the rest of the world can benefit from what we’re doing at HSS without necessarily needing to come here," said Mr. Shapiro.

"We’re also excited about things that may help to change how patients with rheumatoid arthritis are treated. There are initiatives underway that I believe will be revolutionary, as related to the epidemic associated with back pain and the unnecessary inappropriate care that occurs around the world," added Mr. Shapiro.
